Patient Process
The following is everything you can expect from booking a consultation to the care you will receive after your surgery
Consultation and Booking a Surgery Date
1.
Complete the form “Book a Consultation”.
2.
You will need to pay a non-refundable $250 consultation fee prior to your first appointment. If you will then have surgery with us, this fee will be included in the total final price.
3.
You will first have a phone consult with the nurse to prepare you for your consultation with the surgeon. You will then meet with the surgeon who will make the final decision as to whether you are a suitable medical candidate for bariatric surgery. He will explain the different surgical procedures and the risks and benefits of each. This is your chance to ask questions and to fully understand what is involved. Please note that this consultation may also be by phone if you live far from our clinic.
4.
On the very same day you will be permitted to choose your surgery date and sign your consent forms.
5.
You will have 1 week to pay a non-refundable deposit of $3,000 to reserve your surgery date. The deposit will only be refunded if the surgery is canceled for non-medical reasons, as assessed by our surgeon.
Preparation for Surgery
1.
You will be given appointments for your pre-admission testing and evaluation. These may include:
Blood tests
Chest X-ray
Electrocardiogram
History and Physical Examination
Consultation and pre-operative teaching with our dietitian
Pre-operative teaching by our nurse
2.
Depending on your body mass index (BMI), you will be prescribed a 2-4 week supply of a pre-operative liquid diet and the dietitian will explain the process to you.
3.
You will be advised on the time you will need to present yourself to our hospital on the day of your surgery, and instructed on further testing needed prior to surgery.
1.
If you live far from Montreal, it is advised to arrive in the city a minimum of 1 day prior to your surgery day. For recommended hotel accommodations near our hospital, view below.
2.
You will arrive at the hospital at the scheduled time.
3.
You will stay in our accredited hospital for 1-2 nights depending on the surgery you will have. In the rare event that our surgeon would like to monitor you more closely after surgery, he may choose to keep you in our hospital an extra night at no additional cost to you.
4.
If you live far from Montreal, we ask that you stay in Montreal for at least 1 full extra day after you are discharged from our hospital to ensure that you are recovering well enough to return home.
Follow-up After Surgery
1.
Two (2) weeks after your surgery, our nurse will remove the clips (or staples) in our clinic. If you live far from our clinic, you will be provided with a referral so that you can have the surgical clips removed at a clinic or hospital close to where you live.
2.
You will have a follow-up visit at 1 month after surgery with the surgeon, nurse, and dietitian. If you live far from our clinic, this appointment, and all future appointments, can be done by phone.
3.
You will then have a planned follow-up at 3 months after surgery, again with the surgeon, nurse, and dietitian.
4.
You will then have a planned follow-up at 6 months after surgery, with the dietitian and the option of having a follow-up with the nurse if you have concerns.
5.
Your last follow-up appointment with our clinic will be 1 year after surgery with our nurse and dietitian. They will ensure that you are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to continue on your weight loss journey. If you need further consultations with an experienced bariatric dietitian after 1 year, we would be happy to refer you to someone.
6.
At any moment after surgery in the first 12 months, if you have questions for our nurse or dietitian, you will be provided with contact information to communicate with them.
