Do I Qualify?

To find out if you are a candidate for bariatric surgery, answer the questions below. It is important to understand that this criteria is a guide and the surgeon must assess your surgical risk, your understanding of the procedure and risks, your psychological state, and your willingness and dedication to make lifestyle changes for a successful surgery and weight loss outcome.

Medical Criteria for Bariatric Surgery

You are a candidate for weight loss surgery if you fulfill the following criteria based on medical indications:
Your Body Mass Index is equal to or greater than 35 kg/m2 (calculate your Body Mass Index)
– or –
Your Body Mass Index is equal to or greater than 30 kg/m2 with associated obesity-related medical conditions such as:
Type 2 diabetes
High blood pressure
Sleep apnea (with or without the use of a CPAP machine)
Osteoarthritis or joint pain (ankles, knees, hips, lower back)
High cholesterol or high triglycerides or heart disease
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn
However, it is important to understand that this criteria is a guide and the surgeon must assess your surgical risk, your understanding of the procedure and risks, your psychological state, and your willingness and dedication to make lifestyle changes for a successful surgery and weight loss outcome.
Our hospital does not accept patients below 14 years of age. Patients above 70 years of age must be assessed. All patients must be assessed on a case-by-case basis, as in some cases surgery between the ages of 70 to 75 may be possible.
